PRSA member Jim Sellers gave us a roadmap for writing and placing newspaper guest opinions, which he describes as a significant but often overlooked public relations tool. Jim has been writing guest opinions since 1984 for a governor, three state agencies, private timberland owners and others.
Jim has worked in public relations and communications since leaving the Eugene Register-Guard in 1983. He started as a speechwriter in the governor’s office, where he also began regularly writing biweekly newspaper guest opinions. He continued writing guest opinions as a communications officer for the state’s two largest agencies – Human Services and Higher Education – and now works in the Oregon Youth Authority Communications Office.
