Since 2010, the Oregon Capital Chapter has partnered with local businesses and organizations to bring thought-provoking and need-to-know information to an engaging audience of nonprofit leaders and government agencies. Topics range from learning traditional public relations strategy and tactics to the use of new PR tools such as social media.

Below is an outline of the latest workshop which took place on April 6, 2011. We’re looking forward to another year of planning and finding interesting communicators to present at the 2012 PR Workshop next April. Stay up-to-date on our Chapter’s activities by subscribing to our email list.

Schedule

8:00-8:30am – Registration and Networking

8:30am-9:30am – Social Media Revisited:  A Hands On Workshop

Based on feedback from our session last year, many people wanted a hands on workshop in social media. We will look at social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and others in a practical way. We’ll have more lessons learned, tips and tricks.

Presented by:
Tim Fahndrich, Third River Marketing

9:30am-10:30am – The Only Media Guide You’ll Ever Need (Or, what Calvin & Hobbes, Dan Rather and Miss Manners teach us about media relations)

Learn the single most important thing you need to know about working with journalists – and what to do with that knowledge. Learn how journalists think; how to become known as a reliable news source; how to improve your odds of controlling a news story; when to hold a news conference and what elements to include; what to say when you can’t say anything; and how to convince The Boss that you really should disclose that scary-bad news.

Presented by:
Jim Sellers, Oregon Youth Authority

10:30-10:45 – Break

10:45am-11:45am – Conversations and Convergence:  The Future of Communications Planning

Many organizations just dive into social media or start sending press releases without t creating a plan. But, communications planning can seem like a daunting task. We will break down the process by identifying target audiences, defining objectives, and then developing a positioning statement for each audience. Trends in communication planning will also be discussed with plenty of time for questions.

Presented by:
Julie Howard, Spokeswoman, Salem Health
Russell Yost, Director of Marketing and Contributing Professor, Willamette University

11:45am-12:00pm – Lunch Buffet

12:00pm-1:00pm – Ask the Experts – PR in Practice

Do you have lingering questions on how to incorporate effective public relations efforts into your organization? Are you working on a shoestring budget and looking for low cost tools and techniques to make an impact?  This session features PRSA Capital Chapter Board members ready and willing to discuss your challenges and to provide advice and suggestions.
